Flyfishing in Tohoku

about tohoku

Tohoku is located in northern Honshu, Japan's mainland, a region where vast, untouched nature thrives. The four seasons are dramatically distinct, and you can encounter beautiful scenery in every season: the fresh green leaves of spring, the clear streams of summer, the rich foliage of autumn, and the snowy landscapes of winter. Water of exceptional clarity flows through the mountain streams, where native species such as Iwana and Yamame thrive peacefully. Fly fishing in these secluded mountain areas is an experience akin to becoming one with nature. After fishing, you can enjoy onsen baths and local specialty dishes, and experience the warm local hospitality. Tohoku is not only a fishing destination, but a special place to experience the "quintessential Japanese landscape" that soothes the soul.

Tohoku Streams

Japan's deeply preserved wilderness, known as Tohoku, is truly a hidden paradise for fly fishing. Its untouched, rich nature feeds clear streams where Iwana and Yamame lie in wait.
The setting for Iwana fishing is a perfect example of Japanese deep wilderness. These streams, surrounded by broad-leaf forests of beech (buna) and oak (nara), are known for their exceptionally cold and clear waters. The landscape is richly varied, featuring dynamic waterfalls, beautiful deep pools , and massive rocks that create a magnificent view. Anglers in this impressive environment can enjoy a powerful, intense engagement with Iwana.
On the other hand, Yamame fishing primarily takes place in the peaceful village rivers(Satogawa). Fishing in the these rivers, which flow through lush, green rice fields, is a special experience beyond a simple activity. Here, you can feel the calm of the traditional Japanese farming landscape, while enjoying a serene and relaxing moment. Casting your line amid the clear streams and flourishing rice paddies allows you to feel the original scenery of Japan, as if time itself has stood still.
